Kenya
Semester Spent in Kenya
I spent part of my Junior year of college (Fall 1994) studying wildlife ecology and management in Kenya. I went with a program called the School for Field Studies (SFS). My main motivation was to see Africa and do some research there, but I ended up learning much more.
One truly sad moment in my life occurred when I had returned to the U.S. from my trip. I was back in school, back to routine, familiarity, and the same-old-same-old, when the feeling suddenly hit me that Kenya almost wasn't real anymore. I knew that I could remember every little detail in the things that I did everyday there, but it felt as if Kenya—even the memories of it—were no longer a part of me. How I sobbed for the loss.
Today, as I build these web pages, Kenya feels even farther away. My months spent there are just a dusty photo album and a box of souvenirs. I will try to relate some of what I learned and experienced within these pages. (2000 Jul 28)
